CKGR mining raises eyebrows

The announcement yesterday by Gem Diamonds, that government has lifted the suspension of the retention license in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is expected to re-ignite debate on the contentious removal of Basarwa from the area.

Explaining the initial suspension of that license some years ago, the deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Kago Moshashane said "in terms of the Mining Act a license can be suspended depending on the circumstances at the time."

Though he could not comment further on the matter, it is a well-known fact that the prevailing circumstances then were that Basarwa of the CKGR were querying what they saw as unfair and unjustified removal from their home by government. The Basarwa communities took their case to the High Court in Lobatse that ended with the historic ruling of December 2006. The Court ruled in their favour.
