'City-based slaughter houses not a good idea'

The owner of Raserura Abattoirs in Mochudi, Evans Monowe, has discouraged the plea by farmers for a Gaborone-based abattoir, saying that it will pose environmental and health dangers to the society.

He said the disadvantages of having an abattoir in the vicinity, outweighs the advantages. Monowe said that abattoirs located in densely populated areas such as Gaborone are likely to pollute waterways, affect the quality of air as well as be a health hazard.

Monowe was reacting to complaints by farmers and butchery owners in a recent Mmegi report that stated that Gaborone residents were likely to be exposed to unhygienic beef because of the distance and the standards of the slaughter facilities used outside Gaborone.
