Circumcision can reduce HIV risk - medic

There is conclusive evidence that male circumcision can offer significant protection from HIV infection, a medical doctor at BOTUSA says.

Dr Poloko Kebaabetswe says countries that practice circumcision have lower cases of HIV compared to where the practice does not exist. Dr Kebaabetswe said this at a workshop to explore new ways of fighting HIV/AIDS in Kasane last week.

Countries like Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland that only have 20 percent circumcision prevalence are said to be among the world leaders in the epidemic. Nations such as Cameroon, Guinea and Benin where circumcision is still a common practice have experienced low HIV prevalence in recent years, Dr Kebaabetswe said.
