Cigarette brawl lands friend in jail

Thirty-two year old Leboko Castro Ditaola was on Monday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for attacking and grievously harming his friend with a baseball bat after his friend denied him a cigarette.

The magistrate said statements had revealed that the two had a history of mutual understanding in their friendship; they were drinking buddies who shared beer and cigarettes together.

According to the complainant, the two got involved in a brawl on April 28 after the complainant refused to share a cigarette. It was during the brawl that Ditaola battered the complainant with a baseball bat. In passing judgement, the magistrate said the term of imprisonment was reduced since the two were drunk at the time of the offence.
