The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has detected the presence of the vibrio cholerae bacterium in the Shashe Dam near Tonota village, Central District.

But WUC public relations manager Matida Mmipi has assured consumers that WUC's water is treated to the highest standard and tests have revealed that all its treated water remains free of the vibrio cholerae bacterium. Therefore their drinking water is safe .

She says following the Ministry of Health's public notices in recent months on the outbreak of cholera in some of Botswana's neighbouring countries, WUC has been constantly monitoring all its water sources for the vibrio cholerae bacterium.  Mmipi stated that in light of this development, WUC will with immediate effect restrict all movement into the Shashe Dam and its environs.
