Chobe District youth fight AIDS

KASANE: The fight against HIV/AIDS is no child's play for the youth in Chobe District who have to deal with a plethora of challenges. Most popular for its tourism, the district is strategically linked to other countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Angola through the majestic Chobe River.

This means that Chobe, besides being a tourist haven, also serves as a transport route for big hauler trucks travelling to and from these countries delivering goods. It has transformed the area into a highly concentrated zone, where a lot of people are in constant motion. Though all this spells good tidings for the local economy, the downside is that it presents a multiplicity of challenges in the war against HIV/AIDS.

In an interactive meeting with US ambassador Michelle Gavin, Botswana National Youth Council officer Ronnie Shimane says that prostitution is rife in the area. The youth who are the most proactive are the most vulnerable. Due to poverty and peer pressure a lot of young women enter into the oldest trade to eke out a living and support their families.
