Chinese and Batswana in worksite wrangle

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Purser Department Manager for Sinohydro, a company that is constructing Dikgatlhong Dam in Robelela, Jing Jinke, has poured scorn on the local employees in a letter of complaint submitted to the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs and the Office of the President.

Jinke said in an interview that since they came to Botswana they wanted to cooperate with the locals as well as to localise jobs 'but unfortunately the behaviour of the locals is just unacceptable'. He said theirs is an international company with offices all over the world, but they have never been subjected to the treatment they get in Botswana.

"Last year, law enforcement officials arrived at our dam site demanding work permits from all the Chinese and it was not done in a diplomatic manner. We are not criminals. We are here to help develop the country. If government does not welcome us it should not have entered into contract with us in the first place," the manager complained.
