Children should be involved in the decision-making processes, right from the family level, the United Nations International Children's and Emergency Fund says.

According to the UN agency, it is imperative to ensure that children are involved in decisions and activities that affect their lives with regard to their evolving capacities.

Participation is a human right and not the sole preserve of the elderly in the development processes for the simple reason that "adults are not the only resourceful citizens that can contribute to development and decision making. The Setswana proverb reflects this when it states that 'Botlhale jwa phala bo tswa phalaneng', meaning that children also have wisdom.," says UNICEF spokesperson, Edward Mazibane in a communique.
