Child welfare card gets mixed reaction

The new child welfare card of the Ministry of Health has elicited mixed feelings from members of the community.

The card, unlike the previous one, demands that the name of the father - married or unmarried to the child's mother - be put on the medical record card. The card also requires that the HIV status of the mother be recorded.

In an interview, Puseletso Mmoloki, the mother of a 13-month old child says that she fails to understand why the mother's child's HIV status has to be written. She fears that this will encourage stigmatisation against the child as it grows.
