Check expiry date on food products - health official

SELEBI-PHIKWE: A senior Ministry of Health official has warned the public to check the expiry date on food products and their manufacturing process. Chief health officer, Clifford Matsoga told Selebi-Phikwe Town Council meeting last week that one of the challenges facing the country is food sanitation.

He said it has come to the ministry's attention that the food sold in shops and markets are not healthy and pose threat to people. He said a toothpaste sold in Botswana called collage has been found to contain harmful substances. "Food can be rendered unsafe and unhealthy by many factors such as the type of food, the quality of food, the expiry dates of food items, the person handling the food, the storage and preparation of food, lack of inspection of food premises and traditional norms and considerations," he said.

Matsoga stated that they have realised some chain stores change expiry dates on food items. He called upon council officers to inspect shops and make sure that they sell healthy food.
