Charges against baeng dropped

FRANCISTOWN: Last week Friday, the northern regional magistrate, Lorraine Makati-Lesang, acquitted and discharged former president of Botswana Land Boards, Local Authorities and Health Workers Union (BLLAHWU), Pelotshweu Baeng, who was charged with the offence of incitement to violence.

Charges against Baeng were dropped because the prosecution has failed to disclose a prima facie case. This case was declared a state case. Baeng who is a member of Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSU), was accused of having instructed the workers on strike to throw petrol bombs at police officers and put tyres around the necks of oppressors. He said to have done this at a gathering of BLLAHWU last May at Serowe Mall.

He also told them to bring towels to the gathering the following day to protect themselves from teargas and burn tyres on public roads. However, Baeng pleaded not guilty to the charges and thereby enjoining the state to prove charges against him beyond reasonable doubt.
