Government's Central Medical Stores (CMS) in Gaborone is still experiencing serious problems that have resulted in unreliable supply of essential medicines and an oversupply of non-critical items and products throughout the country.

In a statement to Parliament, Assistant Minister of Health, Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri, outlined the problems besieging CMS yesterday.

He said that the problems have led to long and delayed delivery times to healthcare facilities; losses related to expired products; inadequate medicine supply chain and logistics competence; inappropriate processes to support CMS objectives; non-compliance with good manufacturing practices and good distribution practices; dependence on external departments with conflicting objectives, which results in lack of autonomy to efficiently and effectively operate CMS; and inadequate understanding and use of information systems.
