Careers Department Tackles 'Idling Graduate' Problem

The University of Botswana (UB) Careers and Counselling Department's efforts to help graduates find jobs has started to show some positive results a year after reviewing the initiative.

Propelled by an outcry that most graduates from the country's highest institution of learning spent a lot of time roaming the streets without jobs after graduating, UB involved the Careers and Counselling Department to come up with initiatives to help graduates find jobs soon.

The growing numbers of graduates roaming the streets has been causing such a concern that the credibility of UB's academic programmes was put to question. Last year, the Careers and Counselling Department started consultations with stakeholders in both the government and the private sector to try and tackle the problem of idling graduates.
