Cancer patients in agony as robbers steal equipment

Police in Lusaka have arrested two suspects and are looking for an Asian male who was caught on closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras dressed as a doctor during a robbery at the Lusaka Cancer Diseases Hospital.

Some of the equipment has however been recovered from security guards who were on duty on the night of the robbery. In the early hours of October 4, some 'unknown people' stormed the hospital, a new specialised stand-alone facility located inside the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) complex, and selectively stole components of the cancer equipment.

They went away with computers which stored patient records and interfered with the CT scanner, a major diagnostic tool for the whole unit. The alleged raiders also made away with cables and other attachments on which the software licence for the scanner is kept. By the time they left, they had practically walked away with the hospital through their meticulously targeted theft, probably intended to stock up a parallel hospital.
