Campaign heats up at UB

As election day for the University of Botswana Student Representative Council (SRC) approaches accusations are flying back and forth. The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP)'s UB cell, GS 26 is accusing rivals Botswana National Front (BNF)''s cell Mass of pulling down their campaign posters.

The students vote for a new government tomorrow and G S 26 chairman Armstrong Dikgafela says his Party has already reported the Mass chairman Dipogiso Keaoleboga to the campus security office after he was caught pulling down posters. He told Mmegi on Tuesday that the reason why the BNF seems to be out-doing GS 26 in visibility is all down to Mass's dirty games. However he said they have now resorted to displaying their posters in students' rooms. Asked about his Party's chances of winning this year's SRC elections, the GS 26 chairman said he hoped to take advantage of the broken marriage between the BNF and the Congress Party (BCP) at the campus. " They used to work together, they would field one team of candidates but this time they are fighting against each other, and we hope to benefit from that.

However the BNF UB cell leader, Keaoleboga has denied the allegations that they are pulling down opponents' campaign material. " I have never been charged. It is unfortunate that they blame their troubles on Mass. Our opponents have been violent of later. On Monday they attacked one of our members alleging that he pulls down their posters, but their allegations were unfounded", said Keaoleboga who added that the reason why the BNF's posters seem to outnumber the rest is all down to his Party's winning strategy. " Last year we registered 500 new members on campus. This semester alone, we registered 800 new members. We have popular support and are confident of cruising to victory again", he boasted.
