Business opposed to state majority in parastatals

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Members of the business community and stakeholders in Selebi-Phikwe have shown displeasure over government's decision to own 51 percent of shares in parastatals saying this does not augur well with economic efficiency that privatisation seeks to achieve.

Government owns 51 percent of shares in Botswana Telecommunications Corporations and in the National Development Bank.

Speaking during Public Enterprises Evaluation and Privatisation Agency (PEEPA)'s address on privatisation programme, members of the business community felt that the fact that government has first option at acquisition of shares does not benefit shareholders and could result in the government eventually wholly owning those parastatals because it is in control.
