Bursar pleads guilty to school fee theft

The Broadhurst magistrate has convicted a former school bursar after she pleaded guilty to 58 counts of misappropriating school fees.

Malebogo Chawilani, a 36-year-old former bursar at Oodima Junior Secondary School broke down in tears when the magistrate Leana Mokibe-Oahile remanded her in custody till Friday. She cut a sorry figure as she spoke on the cellular phone while waiting for the police van. The magistrate said she was convinced that the plea of guilty the accused entered was unequivocal. She was accused of misappropriating up to P9,110 in school fees between January and November 2006.

The prosecutor, Obakeng Matlhodi said that Chawilani converted to her own use several payments made as school fees and failed to produce records when asked by the headmaster, Mpho Isaiah. "She admitted upon confrontation by the headmaster to have converted the said money to her personal benefit," Moatlhodi said.
