A Botswana Television (Btv) news team got a tongue-lashing from, the Minister of Education and Skills Development, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi yesterday for arriving late at a function.

The journalists from the state-owned station explained that they were late because they were interviewing the director of roads, but the minister told them that they should have given priority to her and her two assistants, Keletso Rakhudu and Patrick Masimolole. The minister, who is a former journalist and overseer of government media, warned that she would return to the station if they journalists there are not careful. She cautioned reporters from Btv that they should put their house in order. One of the crew members explained that they are required to inform the Logistics Officer 24 hours prior to their coverage of a news event, something which surprised Masimolole and Rakhudu. They inquired how reporters should know when there would be fire, robbery or accident that needs television coverage. The three ministers were receiving the report on the investigations into the conduct of 2010 examinations that were marred by several problems after a boycott by teachers to demand better remuneration. The probe was conducted by a committee led by Keetla Masogo.

At the handover ceremony, Venson-Moitoi revealed that they would look at the report, review it and present it to Parliament and cabinet before the end of the year. She thanked the members of the committee for heeding to government request to probe the conduct of the 2010 examinations. The examinations produced poor results that have caught President Ian Khama's eye. "I must candidly report that the exams performance of pupils in our public schools continues to disappoint.
