BTU opts for BFPSU

PALAPYE: The just ended Botswana Teachers' Union (BTU) secondary and tertiary sector annual conference that was held in Palapye has passed a resolution to join the new Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BFPSU).

The motion was proposed by the FRABOTO region made up of Francistown, Bokalaka and Tonota. Mompati Onkabetse of FRABOTO tabled the motion saying the BTU should join a federation that "has bargaining power." Onkabetse's motion was tabled a day after the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Peter Siele, told the conference that amendments to the Public Service Act were published in the Government Gazette on July 15, 2008.

"It is the intention of the government to table the Public Service Bill during the current session of Parliament. It is incumbent upon you as workers to build capacity among yourselves so as to be in a better position to engage meaningfully in collective bargaining with the government," Siele urged.
