British High Commission celebrates Diamond Jubilee

The British High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Jennifer Anderson, hosted the 60th Diamond Jubilee celebrations that were coupled with Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 11's 86th birthday yesterday at her residence.

The event was also hosted to pay tribute to the relationship between the countries. Anderson said that she found it fit to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their queen's reign in Botswana, known as the Diamond Jubilee, as it has been celebrated across the UK and Northern Ireland with a four-day holiday over the past weekend.

"There have been street parties across our land. Over 4,200 beacons have been lit to link villages and communities to reflect our solidarity for some 1,900 years," Anderson shared with the gathering how they celebrate the day back at home. She said that even though there have been a series of events held in Britain, in Botswana they sought to capture a little of the excitement through a week of festivities to mark the links between Britain and Botswana that included a tea party in Serowe where she met the elderly people who saw the queen in 1947, when she was still young and told stories of how the country was like in 1952. "It is an opportunity to mark the relationship between Britain and Botswana and to celebrate all that the Jubilee embodies including the link between our Royal Family, De Beers and Botswana," she added.
