Break-in at Moleps centre leaves inmates stranded

MOLEPOLOLE: Seventy-one illegal Zimbabwean immigrants have been stranded at Molepolole Centre for Illegal Immigrants after prison warders allegedly stole their belongings that were kept in one of the offices.

The Station Commander for Molepolole Police, Superintendent Tawana Tawana, confirmed that they are currently investigating a case of office break-in and theft at Molepolole Prison. "We have not arrested anyone in connection with the incident but we are still investigating the matter and we hope to arrest the suspects soon," said Tawana. He added that the officers who were on duty on the day of the alleged incident told his officers that they did not notice any unusual behaviour by any of their colleagues.

One of the illegal immigrants who spoke to Mmegi at Molepolole Prison yesterday, Leon Chikomba, said they were detained on May 28th and their belongings were stolen on June 2nd when one of the offices was broken into. He said they suspect that one of the warders had something to do with the incident seeing as the perpetrator/s went through the fence before breaking into the office that had their belongings.
