BPP suspends Dan for speaking out of turn

FRANCISTOWN: Ahead of its one-day elective conference in Kalakamati on Saturday, the Botswana People's Party (BPP) has suspended long-time member and former organising secretary, Tongomani Dan.

The former Themashanga councillor has earned the wrath of the BPP after media statements purportedly criticising the party. Dan was furnished with a suspension letter by the BPP vice president Kumbulani William. A few weeks ago, the politician was quoted in a local newspaper saying that the BPP has lost its spark and must disband instead of joining the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). He added that most BPP members do not support the Umbrella project. Dan has always been critical of the Umbrella initiative but his latest utterances did not go down well with the party's top brass who swiftly reacted by side-lining him. It is reported that BPP leaders think the statements have the potential to bring the party into disrepute and mislead members to rebel. Dan confirmed the suspension yesterday. "I have been issued with the suspension letter by the party leadership following my recent remarks in the local media. I received the letter from the party vice president this morning. I will wait for the hearing and take it from there," he told Mmegi. William said Dan was suspended because he breached the party regulations by speaking to the media without authorisation. He said the politician will appear for a hearing on a date to be decided.
