Boy drowns in Shashe River

FRANCISTOWN: Tatitown police are investigating a case in which an eight-year-old boy drowned in the Shashe River in Shashemooke on Tuesday afternoon. CID officer, Lawrence Nthoiwa said the boy was retrieved from the river by members of the public and taken to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

"The little boy was doing Standard Three at Shashemooke Primary School," said Nthoiwa. The police were informed that the boy was sent with others to fetch water from the river and when they arrived, they decided to swim in a deeper part. While swimming they discovered that one of them was missing.

"We were told that others rushed back home to report about the missing child and the public searched for him until they found him in the river," he said. The body is lying at at Kagiso Mortuary. Nthoiwa said they have been visiting villages to carry out public education on the dangers of water, especially after the recent rains. He said it was a surprise that there are some parents who still send young children to fetch water from flooded rivers. "Just few days ago, Shashe River was full beyond capacity and it is worrisome that some parents find it okay to send children as young as eight years to fetch water from that river," he lamented. He said parents should send mature children to fetch water from flooded rivers or perform the duty themselves. He warned the public to be aware of rains and water in general.
