Botswana's fertility rate nosedives

Botswana's population growth rate declined from 3.5 percent in 1991 to 2.4 percent in 2001, which is likely to result in fertility declining beyond replacement levels, a review of the National Population Policy has revealed.

Ministry of Finance and Development Planning chief economist, Lesego Chalashika, disclosed this at a legislators' seminar titled: "Working together to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)" held at the Phakalane Golf Estates yesterday.

She stated that fertility declined from 4.2 children in the 1990s to 3.3 or less children in 2001.
