Botswana, Zim to share P24m to combat FMD

MATSILOJE: Botswana and Zimbabwe will share the cost of inoculating about 220,000 foot and mouth disease (FMD) infected cattle, Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Oreeditse Molebatsi has said.

The infected cattle are mostly along the border villages, from Pumtree to Beitbridge. Assistant Minister Molebatsi indicated that as part of the deal, Botswana will release P12 million over two years.  Zimbabwe will also release an equivalent amount over the same period to effectively combat the disease on both sides. Botswana recently sent a high-powered delegation to Zimbabwe, which included Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Marcus Chimbombi, to present the country's position on the matter.

As Zimbabwe has not been inoculating its FMD-infected cattle, Botswana has appealed to its neighbour to oblige so the disease can be controlled on both sides of the border. Botswana has been crying foul that because Zimbabwe has adopted a stance not to inoculate its cattle, the FMD has always spilled over into Botswana, wreaking havoc.
