Botswana produces 12 doctors

Botswana has produced 12 indigenous professional doctors under the University of Botswana (UB) medical education programme, a UB spokesperson announced in a statement in Gaborone yesterday.

The dozen doctors, who were members of the first cohort of 29 pre-medical students who "transferred from UB to South African medical schools in January 2002", are already doing their one-year internship at the Princess Marina and Nyangabgwe referral hospitals.
"Fifteen of the 29 students joined the five-year MBCHB programmes at the University of the Free State and the University of KwaZulu-Natal and qualified as doctors at the end of last year."

UB says their (the 12) successful graduation is one of the key milestones along the road to the establishment of a medical school at the university.
"The long-term medical school project is of the highest priority and UB wishes to share the attainment of one of its major objectives with the nation at large," the spokesperson said.
