Botswana population grows at diminishing rate - Matambo

In his Budget Speech yesterday, Finance and Development Planning Minister Kenneth Matambo said the preliminary results of last year's national population and housing census show that the Botswana population has gone up by 1.9 percent between 2001 and 2011.

It rose from 1,680,863 10 years ago to the present 2,038,228. Meanwhile, population density has grown from three persons per square kilometer to 3.5 persons per square kilometre between 2001 and 2011.

Matambo said although this points to a population increasing at a diminishing growth rate, the country still needs to ensure that real income growth is sufficient to ensure a rising standard of living for the nation.
