Botswana police rep scoops gender summit award

A representative from the Botswana Police Service (BPS) scooped an award at the just-ended Gender Justice and Local Government Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Senior Superintendent Thatatsotlhe Nwokoro, emerged the winner ahead of 12 other presenters from nine countries in the Gender-Based Violence (GBV)-Support category.Speaking to Mmegi in an interview, Nwokoro said that police officers have one of the most dangerous and challenging jobs in that they attend to horrific incidents, GBV incidents, murder cases, or accidents, which affect them emotionally.

Her presentation, themed "Break The Silence: You Are Human Too", won the hearts of judges and the voting audience.Nwokoro explained that in 2006, BPS started a counselling and social support programme for employees aimed at addressing such issues. Nwokoro said after that BPS kept coming up with more improved programmes, including the one she presented, which was her initiative, all aimed at giving support to police officers. She explained that police officers are often preoccupied with solving other people's disputes and resort to silence when GBV affects them.
"Police officers prefer to die in silence when GBV affects them in their personal lives," she said, adding that this naturally affects the way police officers respond to various cases.
