Botswana nutritionist Boitshepo Giyose has won the Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater, the Appalachian State University, Boone in North Carolina, United States. She will receive the award on April 21. Giyose is the first African to get the award from the university.

Currently she is the senior Food and Nutrition Security Advisor at the African Union's New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). Speaking from her base in Johannesburg, she said she is humbled by the award. "The recognition goes without saying... it has put me on the map and would catapult my career," she said. By working in South Africa, she said she is not lost to Botswana as she is working for the continent - advising on food security and nutrition in improving policies and actions on the ground.

"I am passionate about nutrition," says the self confessed high performer who would not be persuaded to do medicine, law or accounting. She said her late grandmother fuelled her interest in nutrition. At Moeding College she learnt a bit of nutrition in her Home Economics class and later she did Food and Nutrition at Lotsane Secondary School.
