Botswana hosts African parliamentarians

African MPs will convene in Gaborone on the 15th of this month to talk about democracy for three days. The Botswana Parliament in conjunction with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will host the conference.

The conference coincides with the International Day of Democracy on August 15. The theme of the day is 'Democracy and Political Tolerance'.

The IPU was established in 1889 as a focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue. It works for peace and co-operation among people and for the firm establishment of representative democracy. The union fosters contacts, coordination and the exchange of experience among parliaments and parliamentarians in all countries. It considers questions of international interest and concern and expresses its views on such issues in order to bring about action by parliaments and parliamentarians. It contributes to the defence and promotion of human rights.
