BOSETU accused of 'poaching' from BTU during strike

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) has accused the Botswana Secondary Teachers Union (BOSETU) of taking advantage of the recent public sector strike to recruit its members.

Speaking to Mmegi in an interview yesterday, the publicity secretary of BTU, Tidimalo Maeletso, said they received information that as people gathered at different venues across the country during the eight-week strike, BOSETU activists set about recruiting BTU members.

"I have learnt that BOSETU will be holding its national congress in August and that the gathering of striking workers offered them (BOSETU) an opportunity to recruit our members," Maeletso said. It was in BTU's interests to convey its concerns about these unfair practices to the leadership of BOSETU in order to avoid the issue dividing the two teacher unions because "we need each other going forward".
