Booze law ambushes 'April Fools'

Amid confusion and secrecy, the new liquor trading hours became effective on April 1.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry issued a press statement yesterday confirming that the new regulations came into effect on April 1.

"It has come to our attention that there is confusion as to when the Liquor Regulations, 2008 came into force.  The purpose of this press release is, therefore, to confirm that the Liquor Act, No.9 of 2004 came into force on 1 April 2008 in terms of Statutory Instrument No.23 of 2008 published in the Government Gazette Vol XLVI No20 dated 31st March 2008. The Liquor Regulations 2008 also came into force on 1st April, 2008," the press statement read.
