BONEPWA project contributes to livelihoods

The Botswana Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (BONEPWA) has said its food security project has made significant contributions to the livelihoods of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Botswana.

In its bi-annual report released recently, BONEPWA stated that the project outcomes are evident from the diversification drive taken by people living with HIV/AIDS to contribute towards their sustenance through rearing chicken, establishing backyard gardens and rearing small stock. All the activities are meant to contribute towards income and nutrition at household level.  Purchase of village chickens for identified support groups commenced in earnest and diversification of the project to include small stock production from the sale of chickens evolved. The report said the first phase of the project, dubbed "Strengthening HIV/AIDS food security coping and mitigating mechanisms amongst smallholder farmers" was implemented from October 2005 to October 2008. The project covered 18 support groups of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The second phase will start in November 2009 to November 2011.

The project is aimed at contributing towards improved household income and nutrition through economic empowerment of people living with HIV/AIDS. The report said a special dispensation is made to support other vulnerable groups amongst the localities where the project is implemented.
