BONELA's statement shakes government

Government's efforts to stop the circulation of a statement by Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) on Botswana's challenges in fighting the virus turned into an embarrassing international gaffe as officers forcefully retrieved the document from international dignitaries during World AIDS Day celebrations in Moshupa on Saturday.

Sources said the event, which was attended by President Ian Khama, senior government officials as well as ambassadors was going well until BONELA officers started circulating a statement titled: 'Ten Reasons Why Botswana Will Not Achieve Zero HIV Infections'.

The statement calls for government to consider sex workers as major players in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It also says the government should reconsider its position on refusing to distribute condoms in prisons.
