Boko says inequality threatens national unity

The greatest threat to national unity is not ethnic pride but rising inequality, the Botswana National Front (BNF) president Duma Boko has said.

"When the masses of our people are living in deprivation while a few live in wealth, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep those who live on the margins of this country's economic life peaceful" he said at a press conference in response to President Ian Khama's State of the Nation address. In his address, Khama cited ethnicity as a threat to national unity.

The BNF leader dismissed Khama's address saying that there is a gap between the problems and the solutions the President proposes. "This State of the Nation address is eerily silent on pertinent issues," he said.
