Boko fires a broadside at journalists

MAHALAPYE: The president of the Botswana National Front (BNF), Duma Boko, used his party's special congress here over the weekend to launch a scathing attack on local journalists, accusing them of spreading falsehoods about the BNF and lacking credibility and professionalism.

Boko characterised the local media as a disgrace to the ethos of free speech and ethics of journalism in many respects. He said the local media had failed to play its watchdog role by continuing to deliberately publish untruthful reports and misconceptions about his party instead of interrogating issues extensively.

"The lack of professional training in most media houses is also too evident," he noted. "This also weakens our democracy as a nation and fails to energise the electorate to take part in informed political discourse."
