Representatives of the Botswana Federation of Public Service Unions (BOFEPUSU) are scheduled to file an urgent application in the High Court this morning to interdict government from withdrawing services it has been offering unions. BOFEPUSU took the court route after government announced a raft of decisions that affect its affiliates.

The federation is not happy with government's decision to cease facilitating the deduction of loan repayments to unions and micro-lenders. It is opposed to government intentions to downsize the public service and to stop providing office accommodation to Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU) after six months.

BOFEPUSU is challenging government's decision to cease the release of public service employees to serve in union offices on secondment. The federation wants government to reverse is decision to cease with immediate effect the provision of transport to unions for annual conferences, congresses and governing council meetings.  BOFEPUSU lawyers argue that all the above decisions are unlawful and therefore of no force and effect. The federation says that for example, the provision of stop order facilities to pay loans by union members is a legislative requirement.
