BOCODOL transformation cost doubles

The ongoing transformation of the Botswana College of Distance and Learning (BOCODOL) into an open university, will cost an additional P50 million to the institution's operational budget.

For the 2012/2013 academic period, an extra P27 million is needed to run the institution, which will be a fully-fledged Botswana Open University (BOU) in 2016, the executive director, Dr Daniel Tau told the media yesterday.The institution currently operates on an annual budget of P51 million.

The funds will go towards engaging additional staff, rental charges for office accommodation and programme development costs. Each programme is expected to cost P300,000 on average. The additional annual budgetary requirements for staff that will be recruited over a seven-year period to deliver nearly 100 new vocational, professional and tertiary programmes decreases annually by an average of 10 percent from 2011/2012 to 2016/2017. Corresponding tertiary enrolment for the same period is projected to grow at an average of 190 percent per year.
