Bobonong residents reject new ward

SELEBI-PHIKWE: A delegation of Bobonong headmen and residents have petitioned Bamangwato Tribal Authority to protest the creation of a Bobirwa ward village. They claim that the ward has been unconstitutionally established and they suspect ill-motives in the move.

The deputy headman of Makala ward and secretary of the delegation, Joseph Maphula, said they are worried and unhappy with the new ward. He said they are not aware of the ward and it does not appear anywhere in the history of Bobirwa. He said Bobirwa region comprises five main wards - Sekoba, Bolaamba, Lekiko, Serumola and Dandane. All the wards have 38 sub-wards and Maphula said Bobirwa is not among them. He expressed shock the Bobirwa headman of arbitration has been earning a salary he does not even have a Kgotla. He said this is corruption and a waste of public funds. Maphula added that they have written a letter that they are yet to deliver to all relevant authorities to lodge their protest. He maintained that the said headman belongs to Bolaamba ward.

We once petitioned Bobirwa chief Mmirwa Malema who insisted that the ward has been in existence since a long time ago. He even told us that if we want its leaders, they can be availed to us and even asked why its existence bothers us. We maintained that it does not exist at all. He informed us that he does not block us from proceeding with other channels of seeking justice in our case.
Maphula said they went to Malema as dikgosana and he promised to address the matter in the Kgotla but he did not. They have lodged a complaint with the area District Officer before a delegation took off to Serowe to see the Bangwato Tribal Authority. He said they want the ward to be abolished because they know its intentions. We are even surprised that Malema who is not a resident of Bobonong accords himself the right to establish a Kgotla in our village. Malema confirmed the dispute and said that he held a meeting with dikgosana on Monday to address the issue. He refused to shed light on the details of the meeting. He said he will do so after consulting his seniors. His deputy Dimakatso Patane is categorical that there is no Bobirwa kgotla or ward in the history of Bobonong. He said the headman who is said to have been installed in the ward is unlawfully receiving a monthly salary without a morafe. Patanes position is in direct conflict with his boss Malema who he said told him a Bobirwa ward existed a longtime ago. Patane hopes Malema will be in a position to give concrete evidence about the existence of the ward. I do not think that there is anybody who can boldly stand and justify the existence of that ward.
