Bobirwa lines up 30 for BDP primaries

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in Bobirwa constituency is yet to experience a new dimension in politics as it has seen more than 30 candidates tendering their names to contest the August 30 primary elections both for council and parliamentary seats.

There are nine wards in the constituency but it has never happened before that more than five candidates can contest for a single ward in Bobirwa. The ruling party in the constituency was once led by the likes of Walter Mosweu and James Maruatona who served for 15 years. The constituency is one of the ruling party's strongholds before the opposition Botswana Congress Party started to contest. The current area MP, who is also the Assistant Minister of Agriculture Shaw Kgathi, will battle to retain the seat against Letsweletse Mathape.

Matlhape is a new entrant in the race and the look of things indicate that it may take it quite sometime to breakthrough Kgathi's territory and there were allegations that the vetting committee in Bobirwa engaged in a misunderstanding on whether he should be vetted out or what but he was eventually shown a green light. Perhaps it was because he may have started to campaign before the party's officially declared date. It was clear that a cold war existed between the two opponents as it was evidenced by the last sponsored walk in Gobojango where the duo were invited as chief walkers much to the confusion of residents who organised the walk to raise funds for the construction of a lodge at Mmamabaka border post.
