Bobirwa: A mystifying potpourri of conundrum and tourist lure

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Different areas of Botswana may have peculiar issues that are common to their geographic locations. Not Bobirwa region, which seems to be a potpourri of all topical issues. The area is grappling with drought, water shortages, illegal immigrants, Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Malaria, HIV/AIDS as well politics of bogosi.

Bobirwa region has been hard hit by a saddening spell of drought that saw some residents losing their cattle. Granted that cattle farming is the mainstay of the Bobirwa economy this has reduced many families to indigence. The situation is exemplified by carcasses of cattle that succumbed to drought which are a common sight around Bobirwa villages.

It was nature’s temper which had flared resulting in the scarcity of rain last year  and the aftermath of that is the pogrom that ensued. Because of lack of rainfall many Babirwa failed to plough or lost their harvests to unfavourable conditions.
