BoB boss urge women to take charge

The governor of Bank of Botswana (BoB) Linah Mohohlo has lamented that women still pull each other down despite the fact that they have the power to change their lot for the better.

"We know that women are very good campaigners and organisers and therefore, wield the power to elect women to run for and win leadership positions," Mohohlo told a conference of the Botswana Land Board and Local Authority Workers Union (BLLWU) at Molefi Secondary School in Mochudi yesterday. She said women appear to be quite happy to look up to men for leadership. She stated that some women have no interest in tackling issues affecting females when they have assumed power. "It is unfortunate that even with respect to some enlightened women, there is an element of betrayal," charged Mohohlo. She said what such women articulate in public is often different from their actions.

She urged the women to be committed to succeed and win each other and avoid being tentative in their approach and apologetic in their demands. She pleaded with the women to champion their cause and put pressure on government to amend legislation which discriminate them. She said women still face a major problem in their attempts to ascend to positions of power. "Of the 500 biggest companies identified by Fortune Magazine, only 10 have women chief executives, an increase of only one since 2005," she revealed.
