Botswana National Front Youth League (BNFYL) Acting President Tona Selala has condemned the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) for what he said is a waste of money. Selalas condemnation follows reports that the BEC forks out P4 million annually to private schools as payment for the use of their facilities during the examinations marking period.

Speaking at a press conference to map out the year ahead for the BNFYL yesterday, Selala decried that the Botswana education sector is constantly in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

He said that had the BEC used government senior schools as venues for marking, the council would not be spending as much money as they do currently. The public relations officer for the BEC Charles Keikotlhae was this week quoted in local media saying that the BEC started using private schools as marking centers in 2007 following complaints from teachers engaged for the job about the poor quality and security of facilities at government schools.
