BNF yet to ratify IEC code

Only five registered political parties have subscribed to a draft Code of Conduct in the run-up to this year's general elections. Over the years, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it has been trying to persuade registered political parties to sign the Code of Conduct.

The public relations officer of the electoral authority, Osupile Maroba, says the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), the Botswana People's Party (BPP) and Botswana Labour Party (BLP) are the latest to join MELS and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) in signing the code of conduct.

The main opposition, the Botswana National Front, has not yet signed. Maroba says the delay in signing the code, which is designed to help parties resolve any disputes peculiar to the Botswana system, will not hamper the smooth running of elections.
