BNF veterans to meet Moupo

FRANCISTOWN: Two political veterans are due to meet embattled Botswana National Front (BNF) president Otsweletse Moupo to avert further trouble in the party.

Obonetse Menyatso told Mmegi that together with fellow old guard Klaas Motshidisi, he plans to meet Moupo to chart the way forward for the ailing BNF. After a period of peace, the main opposition party has suffered a deep crisis caused by Moupo's personal problems, leading to the controversial summoning of an extra-ordinary general congress in May. The congress called unilaterally by Moupo has only helped to heighten factions and infighting in the party. "It pains me for the party to take this direction. My plan is to meet another party veteran, Klaas Motshidisi so that we can sit down and talk the way forward with Moupo," Menyatso said yesterday. He revealed that he has a plan to save the BNF so that it can continue exerting pressure on the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) for the benefit of the nation and democracy. "Our democracy will not be complete without a united BNF. My plan is that I and Motshidisi should cut out a plan and find out if there is anything we can do," he said.

The veterans have set up strategies that they feel would save the BNF. Menyatso could not predict what will follow after their meeting. "We would convey to the party leader our strategies to save the party," he said. He expressed deep worry at what is happening at the BNF saying that the situation has moved from bad to worse. He claimed that ever since he realised that there are problems in the BNF, he has been under constant pressure to meet Moupo. "You know, I could not reconcile my mind about the negative developments within the leadership and the general membership of the BNF," he asserted and pointed out that he has always urged enhanced political education in the party.
