BNF condemns govt school fees policy

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana National Front councillor for Kgatleng West, Tona Mooketsi says it is disappointing that the government of Botswana is sending students back home for failure to pay-fees. He was speaking at a BNF rally held at Donga over the weekend.

"Today children from poor families, taken care of by social workers are sent back home. The government, at the time of introducing school fees, said the children whose parents earned more than P550.00 per month, would be the ones to pay, but even that was not satisfactory," said Mooketsi.
Still on the issue of education, Mooketsi cited an example of the former Zambian president, Kenneth Kaunda.
He said that Kaunda taught Zambians to be self-reliant because most doctors in that country are indigenous Zambians who also dominate in Botswana's Health sector.
"I therefore want to appeal to all graduates in Botswana roaming the streets unemployed to stand up and vote for the government that will ensure that the needs of all people are addressed.
"During the 2004 general elections, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) bought 57 new cars and 57 new loudspeakers at taxpayers' expense.
"Nobody can change all these activities because these are the policies of the ruling party and the way it was founded. The only best thing is for a change of government," he urged.
On other issues, Mooketsi said the BDP boasts about the construction of roads, schools and other infrastructure developments: "These are some of the basic things that can be accomplished by all governments of poor economies such as Zimbabwe.
"Our government continue to fail to develop people. People should be empowered through education and employment whilst developing the country comes last. In 1966, when Botswana gained independence, the aim was such that all people can enjoy the privileges of this country. Today only few Batswana and foreigners enjoy the privileges brought by independence".
The BNF publicity secretary, Moeti Mohwasa also spoke at the rally.  "Other rallies were held in Maun and Gantsi," he announced.
