BNF campaign intensifies

After the brief high-octane verbal salvos, Botswana National Front (BNF) heavyweights have quickly entered the trenches for quiet and intensive campaigns, ahead of the eagerly awaited special congress in May. The congress is supposed to elect a new BNF leadership after beleaguered party president Otsweletse Moupo fell out with senior members of his central committee. Even with the congress fast approaching, the two party factions have not come up with final lobby lists - a thing that could be suggestive of disagreements and fierce rivalries for certain positions.

In Moupo's camp, there seems to be consensus that he is the undisputed presidential candidate. In the rival camp, opinion seems divided on who between the BNF vice president Dr Kathleen Letshabo and former law lecturer and now private attorney Dr Bucks Molatlhegi can lead the battle against the Moupo axis.

Supporters see the difference between the two in ideological and strategic lenses. Letshabo's supporters say that though Molatlhegi is a dyed in the wool BNF strategist, who does not have a name recognition among the masses.
