BMD is on course to congress - Morwaeng

Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) official, Kabo Morwaeng, has rubbished allegations that his party is considering a compromise instead of holding an elective congress.

Morwaeng was responding to growing speculation that BMD rank and file were wary of an election, especially at the party presidency level, where interim leader Gomolemo Motswaledi is expected to face-off with party spokesman Sidney Pilane. Members fear that an election could create tensions and split the nascent party and prefer a compromise to an open standoff between the two stalwarts. Dismissing the allegations, Morwaeng, who is responsible for mobilising party structures, says the BMD believes in genuine democracy, not "'fong-kong' democracy, e seng ya mopakwana".

"Elections are inherent in every democratic setup," he says. "The best compromise is democracy and not for people to meet somewhere and decide who will lead the party.
