BMD foils conspiracy to oust Ntuane

A conspiracy to oust Botsalo Ntuane as the Leader of the Opposition was foiled last Friday when MPs of the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) objected that there was no opposition party with a majority in the House at present.

The BMD and the Botswana National Front have six legislators each while the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has five.  MPs of the BCP and the BNF had teamed up and written a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Margaret Nasha, the previous day proposing to replace Ntuane with BNF vice president, Isaac Mabiletsa, who represents Kgatleng East in Parliament.

However, BMD legislators countered the connivance of the BCP and the BNF with a letter of their own in which they challenged the capacity of the BCP - which is a minor party in the House- to be involved in the process of determining who may or may not become the Leader of the Opposition.Nasha told Parliament last Friday that after receiving the letter seeking to oust Ntuane, another letter was brought to her in which the BMD challenged the process employed in trying to topple the BMD vice president. She said she would seek advice as the opposition parties simultaneously tried to resolve the matter among themselves.  In the meantime, Ntuane would remain the Leader of the Opposition, Nasha said.
