After a month-long suspension of sales to South Africa the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) can now sell to the country, it has been revealed.

Corporate communications and public relations manager at the BMC, Tiro Kganela said yesterday that the Department of Veterinary Services has advised them that the country can sell cattle meat from zones 10,11, 12 and 13.

However, the commission can only sell to South Africa. This should be meat products from cattle that were slaughtered before April 14th, which was before the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak hit the country. Again it should be cattle that were slaughtered after May 16th, a time when the veterinary services had applied measures to control the disease. Again this should be at BMC Lobatse abattoir only.
